The different types of UK beer

The United Kingdom is renowned for its variety of craft beers. Here are some popular types:

  • Barley Wine – A beer with a higher alcohol content, also known as "barley wine." It contains residual sugars and has a malty, creamy taste.
  • Ale – A beer brewed with both malted and roasted barley. It’s a top-fermented beer, meaning the yeast floats during fermentation. In England, all top-fermented beers are classified as "ale," which includes styles like Pale Ale, Brown Ale, and Red Ale.
  • Stout – A dark beer ranging in colour from deep brown to black. Its flavour is often roasted and bitter due to the use of roasted or burnt malts.
  • IPA – The India Pale Ale is one of the most popular craft beer styles. Nearly every brewery has its own IPA. The original IPA originates from Britain and features fruity, resinous, and balanced flavours.

These are just a few examples of the diverse beer styles from England. It’s no wonder the country is famous for its beer! Try them all and enjoy their unique flavour profiles.

The history of English beer

Everyone knows Great Britain has a deep connection with beer. But where does English beer come from? Interestingly, the Netherlands played a significant role in its history. In the early 15th century, the Dutch introduced hopped beer to England. It took another 150 years before the British fully embraced it.

In the beginning, English breweries primarily produced ales and fruit beers. Due to their short shelf life, these beers were brewed in small batches. After the introduction of hops, some breweries began using them in their brewing process, while others continued brewing hop-free beer. This led to two distinct beer styles in England.
